Old World is a turn-based strategy game made by people who previously worked on games like Civilization. Old World mixes Civilization gameplay elements with Crusader Kings’ story events and characters and creates a unique experience for the fans. The game has some issues in the UI, and its graphics are a little bit outdated. Also, it can be overwhelming for newcomers. All and All, It is a well-made strategy game that I can easily recommend to the genre’s hardcore fans.
When your larder is looking a little sparse, you can also seek help from your fellow rulers. The focus on people benefits the diplomacy system immensely, as these are personal relationships that you’re developing. Friendships with foreign leaders can be completely undone by the way an event plays out, but as always there are plenty of opportunities to repair the damage. More so in the late game, however, once you’ve unlocked the ability to employ an ambassador. Or you can just use espionage to steal from them. Sometimes the prerequisites do feel a bit restrictive, though, like alliances only being possible if you’ve got a diplomatically inclined leader.
Fraser is the UK online editor and has actually met The Internet in person. With over a decade of experience, he’s been around the block a few times, serving as a freelancer, news editor and prolific reviewer. Strategy games have been a 30-year-long obsession, from tiny RTSs to sprawling political sims, and he never turns down the chance to rave about Total War or Crusader Kings. He’s also been known to set up shop in the latest MMO and likes to wind down with an endlessly deep, systemic RPG. These days, when he’s not editing, he can usually be found writing features that are 1,000 words too long or talking about his dog.

There is a visceral pleasure to watching mechanical monstrosities terrorize villagers in a world that feels so close (yet so far) from our own, but this game truly shines whenever you take it upon yourself to dig a little deeper. Maybe aspects of Horizon Zero Dawn’s open-world gameplay played it a bit too safe, but the quality of its lore, world, and characters immediately set it apart from nearly everything else out there. – MB
Many are eager to bury recent Bethesda games in order to elevate Kingdom Come’s virtues, and I can honestly understand the enthusiasm to do so. Though not nearly as refined or well-produced as the best Elder Scrolls games, it does feature a more “hardcore” historically driven version of that fundamental role-playing experience that emphasizes immersion even at the cost of a higher learning curve. It pushes in a direction that too few games of this size and scope do. – MB
When your core gameplay is “go very fast”, you need plenty of road to go fast on. Burnout Paradise took this to the extreme a little, with the city of Paradise having a seemingly endless series of winding roads, with events that you could start at almost every intersection in the city. Despite that, the game still manages to give you a sense of familiarity with the map, as each race ends in one of a small handful of locations.
Thankfully, Marvel’s Spider-Man delivers a Spider-Man experience that recreates the thrills of Spider-Man 2’s open-world web-slinging while offering so much more in every other area. Indeed, the only thing better than swinging around this game’s lavish open world is experiencing the wonderful original Spider-Man story that the talented folks at Insomniac Games were allowed to tell. It truly is the definitive Spider-Man video game experience. – MB
Auroa in Ghost Recon Breakpoint has a map designed quite similar to Arma 3, only much bigger and full of all the usual Ubisoft trimmings to keep you occupied. It’s the kind of map that you’ll never truly know all of, forcing you to study the terrain for each mission to formulate successful plans.
I’ll never know why there aren’t more truly great martial arts games, but I do know that whenever I find myself lamenting the lack of noteworthy entries into that subgenre, I can always turn to Sleeping Dogs for comfort.
