Most of us are aware of what voiceovers are, and how they help a product or a service reach out to larges masses. Voiceovers can be a real game changer as it is impactful and persuasive and helps prospective consumers know more about the product or service that you try to sell or offer. Even though voiceovers give us information about different products, services, stories, books, and many such things, they are completely different from commercials.
I want to take the opportunity and throw light on promo voiceover and how it is different from other types of voiceovers.
What is a promo voiceover?
Voiceover can be used for various fields and genres, such as the automobile industry, medical industry, books, and even movies. While Voiceovers can be quite lengthy or interactive, depending on the purpose, a promo voiceover is typically short and crisp. A promo voiceover is analogous to a movie trailer which just gives a quick glimpse into the whole thing. While other types of voiceovers such as audiobook narration, e-learning, or medical voiceover aim at giving us more information and insight into a matter by incorporating engaging storytelling techniques, promo voiceovers rather aim at grabbing the attention of people. Promo voiceover may look like an Ad commercial as both of them have a similar motto: to grab the attention of people and create their interest in something. However, Promo Voiceovers are different from commercials in terms of what they are promoting. While Commercials persuade people about a product or a service, Promos are mainly dedicated to broadcasts or shows. For example- If a movie is being promoted with a short voiceover, it would be called a promo and not an Ad or a commercial. The ultimate motive is the same- to give an enticing glimpse of something to create interest in the audience.
Types of Promo voiceover
A promo is typically used to promote or highlight a show or an episode to air soon. Based on when exactly the promo is played- Before, after, or during the show, it is classified as a teaser, re-joiner, recycler, or billboard.
- Teaser- If a promo is played either before the show or during a commercial, giving an interesting and intriguing glimpse of what is going to happen next, then it is called a teaser. Quite obviously as the term goes, it teases and shows you a tad bit of the upcoming sequence in the show and leaves you at the edge of your feet, making you want to see more and break the suspense. Teasers try to ensure that audience can stay engaged and not get digressed from the channel. It can start with “Stay tuned to know what happens next.”
- Re-joiner- Re-joiners is usually played after an Advertisement break to help the audience reconnect back with the show. It’s a quick recap of where things were left and where to resume from.
- Recycler- This kind of promo is shown at a different time during the day, giving information on when to tune in to the broadcast. For example, “Catch a brand-new episode of this show on this channel at sharp 7 PM.” It’s like a reminder and a notice which keeps the audience notified about the time and makes sure they don’t forget to tune into that particular show on a particular channel at a given time.
- Billboard- If a promo mentions a sponsor’s name, then it’s termed as a Billboard. For example“This show is brought to you by….”
